Organized by Scholars Institute of Technology and Management (SITM)
Conducted by Aaranyak Research Division
Introduction
The Scholars Institute of Technology and Management (SITM) successfully hosted a 6-day training program on Basics of Remote Sensing and GIS from 18th to 23rd September 2024. The program, conducted in collaboration with experts from Aaranyak Research Division, aimed to equip students with foundational knowledge and hands-on experience in geospatial technologies, including GPS, Google Earth Pro, and QGIS software.
The training sessions were led by subject matter experts Arup Kumar Das, Madhusmita Borthakur, and Abhishek Sarkar, who provided a comprehensive learning experience for the participants.
Program Highlights
Day 1:
Focused on GPS technology, with practical sessions on field data collection, data processing using Base Camp Software, and an introduction to Google Earth Pro.
Trainer: Arup Kumar DasDay 2:
Explored mapping and digitization in Google Earth Pro, including the creation of KML/KMZ files and map preparation.
Trainer: Abhishek SarkarDay 3:
Provided an introduction to Remote Sensing and GIS, an overview of GIS data types, and practical sessions using QGIS software.
Trainer: Madhusmita BorthakurDay 4:
Focused on digitization techniques and attribute analysis in QGIS, including the creation of vector data for spatial analysis.
Trainer: Abhishek SarkarDay 5:
Advanced topics such as styles, buffer creation, satellite data interpretation, and land use analysis using the Semi-Automatic Classification Plugin in QGIS.
Trainer: Madhusmita BorthakurDay 6:
Concluded with map composition in QGIS, group presentations on geospatial projects, and a post-evaluation test to assess participant learning.
Trainers: Madhusmita Borthakur and Abhishek Sarkar
Outcome
The program provided participants with:
- A strong foundation in Remote Sensing and GIS concepts.
- Hands-on experience with tools like GPS devices, Google Earth Pro, and QGIS.
- Skills in data collection, mapping, analysis, and visualization.
The post-evaluation test and group presentations reflected the participants' significant progress and ability to apply the knowledge gained during the program.
